Ask Annette & Debbie: Is the Cold Shoulder Still Cool?

Dear Annette & Debbie, Off-the-shoulder tops and dresses are practically everywhere, and while I love the shape, I wonder if it’s too late for me to commit to the trend. Is it on its way out? Is there a way I can make it feel fresh? —Morgan W.

Dear Morgan, We are of the belief that the cold shoulder isn’t going anywhere—and for good reason: it’s feminine, creates a beautiful silhouette, and elevates everything from cutoffs to jeans to dresses. The other good news is that there are so many fresh iterations of the trend, whether you want to keep it demure or pump up the volume, there’s something for every comfort level here at Intrigue.

Beginner

If you’re apprehensive about revealing too much for the office, or just like to keep it simple, opt for a top or dress that shows off subtle slivers of collarbone and décolletage. Pair with a platform shoe and add a dramatic earring to finish.

Intermediate

Straps, ruffles, and asymmetrical details are the next step. Ultimately, these necklines are more festive and make the most sense in a dressed up scenario; you’ll want to balance the intricate details with subdued classics—pencil skirts work particularly well, even denim.

Advanced

We love the drama here. These elaborate blouses can go both ways: super dressed-up with elevated pants or a skirt, even a streamlined jean for a night out. Keep the shoes and bag simple so they don’t compete with the neckline.

Statement Furs

Overall, fur—both real and faux—made a strong showing on fall runways in various forms, but it was the use of bold colors and prints that really caught our eye.

Ruffles

We’re used to seeing over-the-top pieces on runways that often employ laughable proportions. But for fall, designers like Norma Kamali managed to fuse structured high-fashion ruffles with wearability.

Plaid Coats

Fall runways usually bring more tartan than we can handle, but this year, labels like Calvin Klein and Victoria Beckham approached plaid in a much cleaner, subtler, muted way, and used the print on everything from outerwear to cocktail dresses.

The Edit: 5 Fabulous Fall Fashion Trends to Look Forward to

Now say that five times fast!..

It’s that time of year to start looking forward to the upcoming trends of Fall.  According to pantone this coming season may feel like a never ending “throw back Thursday” if their predictions prove to be true.  The color authority alludes that, earthy neutrals (think herby green and stormy gray) will mix with emboldened pastels (like orchid and apricot) on all manner of fashion pieces and home decor. With that being said, we at Intrigue have rounded up a very comprehensive trend guide to everything you will be seeing, shopping, and wearing in the months to come.

  1. Happy Hemlines– The flounce hem is the happiest. Both flirty and fun, the flounce hem works well for the office, or for evening. This is exactly the kind of versatile piece every woman needs in her wardrobe. Why wear just a pencil skirt when you can have a personality skirt?

  1. Plaid and Simple– Plaid is had a moment on the runways and now it’s time to transition it into your wardrobe. Since we all are guilty of overdoing black in the winter, it will be nice to see some print to brighten up the mood.

  1. The 70’s vibe– If you feel like reliving the last days of disco, now is the time to do it. Designers looked to the decade that brought us Saturday Night Fever for inspiration this fall, which means lots of flares, as we mentioned, plus knits and boho silhouettes. Can you dig it?

Breaking All The Rules!

As trends seem to come and go, it can be a struggle to keep all the Do’s and Don’ts straight, so just make sure you get rule #1 down…rules are meant to be broken!  What was once a fashion faux-pas is merely a myth today. Below is a list of common rules to dispel the myths that do not necessarily apply anymore in the ever evolving fashion world.

#1 . It’s OK To Wear White After Labor Day:

Although you will want to save your white linens for the summer season, a cozy white wool sweater, coat, and even jeans are standout pieces that can be worn into the next season…think winter white!

#2. Your Bag DOES NOT have to Match Your Shoes:

If you are into matchy, matchy…by all means go for it but you do not need to abide this rule all the time. Mix it up! A playful blend of accessories always elevates a look.

#3. Play With Prints: Mix & Match:

From Polka dots, checks and stripes to leopard and paisley, print mixing is hands down one of the most popular street style trends of the last few seasons.

#4. Navy + Black:

Wearing navy and black together has gotten a bad rap in the past but now-a-days it looks ever so chic paired together!

#5. Why Not Wear Sequins and Metallic’s in the Daytime Too?!

Who can turn down a little flare?! Although you might want to save your sequin dress for a night out, why not wear a little sparkle in the daytime too. Just keep it to a minimum. By adding one piece to your ensemble like a skirt or jacket, it will keep your look simple yet edgy.

#6. Short Women CAN Wear Long Dresses and Pants:

The Midi length is in! Whether it’s a long dress or wide leg trouser, what it comes down to is a flattering fit.

#7. Stockings and Tights with Open Toe Shoes:

Pairing stockings, tights or even socks with an open toe shoes is certainly an outgoing look. For the fall season, make a statement by pairing a contrasting color shoe against black tights.

#8. Be Bold, Wear Both Silver And Gold!

Mix your metals! Whether it’s your jewelry or accessories , metallic’s of any shade can be complementary instead of clashing.

Black and white interpretations are being seen on the “RUNWAYS” of Trina Turk, Chanel, and Diane von Furstenberg, to name a few.  You can showcase your vitality by mixing prints, color blocking, wearing geometric patterns or accenting with unexpected details.

Here at Intrigue, the “REALITY” of this eternal trend is ever so present! Check out our story wall showcasing designer dresses from Joseph Ribkoff, Nicole Miller, Yoana Baraschi, and Laundry.ImageBe inspired by Intrigue’s edge and InStyle’s “Haute Minimalism”.  The magazine article notes: “REASONS TO LOVE IT!  Architectural shapes and structured fabrics give way to swirly skirts, slouchy pants, and dresses that skim the body in a stripped-down palette of black and white. It’s a citified way of dressing that radiates a cool confidence.” Looking for a more causal way to wear the trend?  Look no further as Intrigue’s sporty wearables exhibit the classic contrast addiction too!

ImageShop looks from Bailey 44, Burning Touch, Elie Tahari, and Ted Baker.

Create your own reality but resist the urge to inject a predictable pop of color. Keep the look cohesive with black or nude footwear. If you’re not used to wearing color or prints, explore a more adventurous side to your style with pattern play!  Pair a printed bottom with a crisp white top, wear a printed dress, or take it a step further by mixing prints such as polka dots with stripes to create a unique and fun look. For the faint of heart, play it safe by blending solids.

We hope you are feeling inspired to create excitement in your Intrigue-ing spring wardrobe.  Thanks for joining us!

Until next post…Bring your personal fashion fabulosity to life!
